Blog Tour Review—The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

BOOK DESCRIPTION

VALIANT

A richly-imagined, gripping historical fantasy for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Cinda Williams Chima, The Valiant recounts a seventeen-year-old's tumultuous journey from fierce Celtic princess to legendary female gladiator and darling of the Roman empire.
The youngest daughter of a proud Celtic king, Fallon has always lived in the shadow of her older sister Sorcha's legendary reputation as a warrior. But when Fallon was a young child, the armies of Julius Caesar invaded the island of Britain and her beloved older sister was killed in battle.

On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Fallon is excited to follow in her sister's footsteps and earn her rightful place in her father's royal war band. She never gets the chance.

Instead Fallon is captured by a band of ruthless brigands who sell her to an exclusive training school for female gladiators--and its most influential patron is none other than Julius Caesar himself. In a cruel twist of fate, Fallon's worst enemy, the man who destroyed her family, might be her only hope of survival.

Now, Fallon must overcome vicious rivalries, chilling threats, and the dangerous attention of Caesar himself to survive the deadly fights that take place both in and out of the arena - and claim her place in history among the Valiant.

Review-
Every now and then I’ll read a book that scares me like no other. ‘The Valiant’ is terrifying in a way that makes me glad I don’t live in a time where slavery is a thing. Where being bought was entertainment and fighting to the death was a sport. Just thinking about if our world today was like that, has me shaking in my boots. (It’s not lost on me that there are countries out there like this. Makes it all the more scarier.) That all being said, I loved the absolute sh*t out of the book for so many reasons. The main one being our main character. Fallon is a bad-ass warrior princess fighting for freedom.

All Fallon wants to do is be a warrior in the Cantii war band—it’s all she’s ever wanted since she could remember. Sorcha, Fallon’s older sister, is the best fighter and the one person Fallon looks up to. Once she becomes the warrior she’d worked so hard to become, she’ll also have the honor it comes with and possibly new, blossoming love. That all changes the night she gets taken and readied as a slave in Rome. The place she gets sold to is an academy that trains women to be fighters—to be a gladiator. The thing is, not everything is what it seems. Fallon must train hard in order to become ready to fight. It’s either that or die in the arena.

“He turned, suddenly, as if he’d sensed me watching him. I felt a wave of heat wash over me as he stared at me across the distance. Even through the veils of smoke and sparks from the campfires, I thought I saw a raw longing in his gaze.”

Then, there’s the whole forbidden romance aspect to the story. Which I loved because who doesn’t want something they can’t have? Romance is my jam and I’m glad to say that this one didn’t disappoint. While it’s not the focal point of ‘The Valiant’ it was still nice to get bits and pieces here and there. Throughout the book, it was consistently slow. I kept putting the book down and getting easily distracted while reading. But eventually I became engrossed and wanted to know what happened next.

Overall, I think if you like stories about women who fight for what they want—no matter what’s standing in the way, then this is for you. While it was predictable at times, it was still a great book about Ancient Rome. Plus we get to see Julius Caesar, the enemy! I can’t wait for the next book.

DEFIANT

The darling of the Roman Empire is in for the fight of her life in this lush sequel to the acclaimed historical fantasy The Valiant.
Be brave, gladiatrix... And be wary. Once you win Caesar's love, you'll earn his enemies' hate.

Fallon was warned.

Now she is about to pay the price for winning the love of the Roman people as Caesar's victorious gladiatrix.

In this highly anticipated sequel to THE VALIANT, Fallon and her warrior sisters find themselves thrust into a vicious conflict with a rival gladiator academy, one that will threaten not only Fallon's heart - and her love for Roman soldier Cai - but the very heart of the ancient Roman Empire.

When dark treachery and vicious power struggles threaten her hard-won freedom, the only thing that might help the girl known as Victrix save herself and her sisters is a tribe of long-forgotten mythic Amazon warriors.

The only trouble is, they might just kill her themselves first.

Review—Just Between Us by Rebecca Drake

Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Published: January 9, 2017
Genre: Suspense
Source: Finished copy
Rating: 4 Stars

Blurb:
Four suburban mothers and friends conspire to cover up a deadly crime in this heart-stopping novel of suspense in the tradition of Lisa Scottoline and Lisa Unger.
Alison, Julie, Sarah, Heather. Four friends living the suburban ideal. Their jobs are steady, their kids are healthy. They’re as beautiful as their houses. But each of them has a dirty little secret, and hidden behind the veneer of their perfect lives is a crime and a mystery that will consume them all.
Everything starts to unravel when Alison spots a nasty bruise on Heather’s wrist. She shares her suspicions with Julie and Sarah, compelling all three to investigate what looks like an increasingly violent marriage. As mysterious injuries and erratic behavior mount, Heather can no longer deny the abuse, but she refuses to leave her husband. Desperate to save her, Alison and the others dread the phone call telling them that she’s been killed. But when that call finally comes, it’s not Heather who’s dead. In a moment they’ll come to regret, the women must decide what lengths they’ll go to in order to help a friend.

Just Between Us is a thrilling glimpse into the underbelly of suburbia, where not all neighbors can be trusted, and even the closest friends keep dangerous secrets. You never really know what goes on in another person’s mind, or in their marriage.

Review:

This is the way of fate—all of these pieces that must slot into place, one leading to the other, a progression toward a conclusion that seems inevitable only after the fact.

O. M. G. That was seriously messed up—but in a good way! I knew once I’d been contacted to read and review the book, that I would enjoy it. ‘Just Between Us’ tells the story of four friends that are tested when they notice one of their friends is in need of saving. What happens when said friend doesn’t want any help being saved? More importantly, the question begs to be answered—what would you do as a human being if you noticed someone you love was being hurt? Things are not always what they seem.

You never know what happens behind closed doors.

This quote in the story is very true, I’ve come to find. Do we ever really know someone? Like truly know everything? In this particular thriller, we follow Allison, Sarah, Julie, and Heather. These four became friends and bonded over their love of coffee and having children around the same age. One day, Allison, being the observant one, notices bruises that look very much like finger marks on Heather’s wrist. Which could only mean one thing—she’s being abused. It’s confirmed when Heather makes up a bogus excuse as to why it’s there. Cue Allison, Julie, and Sarah all becoming deeply suspicious.

There’s even more proof as the weeks go by. The three friends want nothing more to help their damsel in distress. But again, you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. Then one night changes absolutely everything. Who can the women trust? Are they being watched? So many questions that I just had to get to the bottom of! I felt like I was reading the adult version to Pretty Little Liars, except with a better story line. (This is not a knock on PPL, I love those books too!)

I stayed up all night to read. It was one of those instances where I knew I would love the book from the very first page. Overall, I think readers will love this fast-paced thriller that keeps you on your toes. The novel touches heavily on friendship. I liked that a lot. It showed us all the high and lows that come when people are faced with tragedy. While a bit predictable at times, I was still surprised with the ending revelations. I now feel like I need a new suspense novel to tide me over until I get my fix!

We are all the damned and we are all the saved.

Cover Reveal—How to Date a Douchebag:The Coaching Hours by Sara Ney

THERE ARE NO DOUCHEBAGS IN THIS STORY. Well, there are, but they’re not who this story is about. This story is about me—the coach’s daughter. When I moved to Iowa to live with my dad, the university's take-no-prisoners wrestling coach, I thought transferring would be easy as pie—living with my father would be temporary, and he'd make sure his douchebag wrestlers left me alone. Wrong on both counts. ASSHOLES ALWAYS COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK WHEN THE STAKES ARE HIGH. A bet is placed, and I'm on the table. After one humiliating night and too much alcohol, I find the last nice guy on campus. And when he offers to rent me his spare bedroom, I go all in. It’s time for the nice guy to finish first. Midnight chats and spilling my problems turn to lingering touches. Lingering touches turn to more. And the ultimate good guy has the potential do more damage than any douchebags ever could.   ADD TO GOODREADS

Being in love with someone who doesn’t love you back sucks.
Being in love with your brother’s best friend sucks even more, because you know it can never happen. How tragic is that?
I’ve been in love with Lincoln Andrews since we were kids and he stuck up for me against my brother and played tea parties with me in the treehouse. I’ve also avoided him for the past year because he broke my heart…more than once.
Now we’ve been thrown together at a tropical resort to celebrate my parents’ second wedding, and things are intense and getting worse, no thanks to an insane plan my friends cooked up to get me my dream man.
No one else even comes close to what Linc means to me. He’s always there for me, but is it because he cares for me too—or only because I’m his best friend’s little sister?
It’s time I find out once and for all…but what if our crazy plan blows up in my face and ruins everything?

I smiled at her. It wasn’t a friendly smile. It was sinister. Her eyes widened, and she moved back on the rock, knowing I was coming for her.
“You better lose that dress real quick, Princess. I’d hate for it to get wrecked.” I crept closer. Panic marred her features. She knew all too well that I meant what I said.
“You wouldn’t.” She held her hands out to stop me.
“Come on, you know me better than that. You’re getting in this water. It’s just up to you whether your pretty dress is coming in with you.” I turned my back to her. “You have until the count of three. If you’re not in the water by then, I’m turning around regardless of whether you’re still dressed or not.”
“Linc, I’m not skinny-dipping with you.” Her voice quivered a touch with nerves.
I chuckled. “No one said anything about skinny-dipping, but please don’t let me stop you if you feel inclined to swim naked.” I reached for the waistband of my boxers, and intending to mess with her a little more, I removed them completely. “I might just join you.” I threw my underwear over my shoulder and onto the rock.
I was surely going to hell for this.
“Linc! Oh, my god!” I looked over my shoulder at her to find her face buried in her hands.
“To the count of three, Indie,” I warned one last time.
She huffed.
What was I doing? She was Nate’s sister.
“One.”
And she had Jack-ass for a boyfriend.
“Two.”
She was completely off limits.
“Three.”
It was silent. I turned to find her standing on the rock, twisting her hands nervously in front of her. Her dress…at her feet.
I gulped.
Lace. White lace. Matching.
Hell.
I was going to hell.
And I didn’t care. I didn’t care that she was Nate’s sister. I didn’t care that she had a boyfriend. I didn’t care that she was entirely off limits. She was mine. Always had been. And one way or another, I wasn’t leaving this island without getting what I wanted.
