Review:
Virgil & Owen is the story of how not to make
friends. Virgil finds a polar bear one day and decides to claim him as his own.
No one can play with the polar bear or have fun with him because he
"belongs" to Virgil.
Virgil becomes so possessive that the polar has no choice but to tell him "No" and that he has a name and it's Owen. At this time Virgil isn't happy and throws a tantrum because his polar bear doesn't want to just be his. Why can't Owen just be friends with Virgil? What's so wrong about that?
Meanwhile, Owen and the other animals come to him and ask if he wants to play. In the end Virgil learns a great lesson, being a friend is a mutual thing and trying to make them just "yours" will push them away.
This is my first children's book for review and first time reading Paulette Bogan. I enjoyed the story as well as the illustrations. It's a perfect way to teach children the right and wrong way of how to make and not make friends. I find that children are very much visual learners. Having a polar bear and penguin as the main characters is so fun!
I definitely look forward to more from the author and I wouldn't be too sad to see another book involving both Virgil & Owen!

Paulette Bogan was
raised on the Jersey Shore,
where she had her
first “artistic experiences”.
During a family outbreak of chicken pox, Lucille Bogan, Paulette’s mother, encouraged Paulette and her brothers and sisters to paint a mural on the playroom wall! For Paulette, this was the start of something big. She became a humorous artist, enchanting grammar school and high school teachers with her “flattering portraits” of them. This led to a great amount of free time, better known as detention, where Paulette continued to develop her humorous style.
